A group of international students from the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) embarked on a tour of the Lingang Intelligent Manufacturing Base on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 4:35 PM. The tour, organized by the Mechanical Engineering International Students Union (MEISU) and led by Jacky Wenky Zheng LU, was designed to provide a firsthand look at advanced manufacturing practices.

The Lingang Innovation Workshop Research Base is a collaboration between the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering of SJTU and the Shanghai Intelligent Manufacturing R&D and Transformation Platform. The base aims to support China's national strategy for manufacturing development and address the demand for technology R&D and transformation in Shanghai's intelligent manufacturing industry.

During the visit, the students observed various systems, including the automatic body inspection system, bridge vibration and deformation detection microwave instrument, body size quality control system, portable wearable electrocardiogram health monitor, and distribution network live working intelligent robot. Many students showed particular interest in the portable wearable ECG health monitor, with several testing their own ECG.

The SJTU-Fraunhofer Lab is a key player in the union between Germany's Industry 4.0 and China's intelligent manufacturing initiatives. The students toured the Lab's intelligent interactive assembly system and even saw SJTU students attending classes, working on projects, and participating in unique Chinese-German bilingual courses.

Shanghai SmartState Technology Co., Ltd.  is a tech firm born out of SJTU's research and development endeavors. The company works to facilitate the transformation and upgrade of traditional manufacturing industries through innovative design.

During their visit, the students engaged in discussions on Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and their intelligent obstacle avoidance system. They also learned about the second-generation AGVs that can adapt to more varied factory environments, such as uneven flooring. The visit concluded with a friendly exchange between the international students and the local Chinese students.

Shanghai H-RISE New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., located at Factory No. 4, 168 Xin Siping Road, is a high-tech company specializing in the research, development, production, and sales of high-power fuel cell stacks. The company has developed its own automotive fuel cell stacks and has mastered the core technologies of the entire industrial chain from catalysts, membrane electrodes, bipolar plates, to stacks and electrolyzers.

The students showed keen interest in the working principle of fuel cells, and actively discussed their safety, functioning, and the commercial model for promoting fuel cell vehicles. The company's efforts contribute to the national strategy of reaching peak carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.

This insightful tour of the Lingang Intelligent Manufacturing Base provided the international students with a deeper understanding of Shanghai's thriving intelligent manufacturing industry. The students returned to campus not just with knowledge, but also with memories of this unique cultural and educational exchange.
