Posted by:     Time:2012-06-11

26 undergraduate students from School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and 12 undergraduate students from the College of Engineering, Pennsylvania State University (PSU) displayed 12 capstone design projects at the SJTU-PSU Global Capstone Project Showcase from 1 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at Gao Tian Hall of School of Mechanical Engineering, SJTU. The showcase was attended by instructors both from SJTU and PSU and delegations from multi-nationals, for instance, Tyco, Home Depot, Dresser-Rand, Air Product, Shell, SpeeCo, Timken, etc.

Global Capstone Project showcase features a semester-long effort taken by students both from home universities and universities broad, to form a global student team, to solve problems provided by industry and to mimic operations of multi-national global engineering teams.

At 8:30am, SJTU Vice President Zhen Huang met with Robert Zhu, President of Tyco Asia; Paul J. Piccolomini, Vice President of Global Tyco Engineering & Global Integration; Martin Trethewey, Professor-in-Charge of MNE Undergraduate Programs, Arthur Glenn Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Michael C. Immel, Director of Corporate Relations and Facilities, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. President Huang first expressed his gratitude to Tyco, who has long been providing scholarship for students, creating intern opportunities to students as well as sponsoring global capstone projects. At the meantime, he stressed the importance of industry and university relationship in today’s universities. He praised the global capstone project as a project that merges students’ textbook knowledge into real-world experience and trains students’ communication capability in cross-cultural workplace.
