Topic：Volvo's New Energy Vehicles for California and the World

In this invited lecture, Dr. Sugioka will firstly explain why Volvo started developing new energy vehicles in California where he works and then, discuss some of the research vehicles they are developing today for future products. Plenty of time for Q&A will be left to students for their interests.

Ichiro Sugioka oversees strategic planning and scientific support of concepts developed at VMCC, a think tank for Volvo Car Corporation's senior management, located in Southern California. In this role he has been involved in numerous Volvo production models and concept cars including the S60 (2001), 3CC (2004), and the ReCharge Concept (2007). Most recently, he worked with EnerDel to help develop battery packs for the V70 Plug-in Hybrid and the C30 Pure Electric Vehicles.
 
Ichiro has also performed special studies for senior Volvo executives on biotechnology and advanced communication systems as well as participating in the Sustainable Mobility 2030 scenario planning by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
 
Prior to joining Volvo in 1994, Ichiro served as Principal Engineer at California Institute of Technology's 10-foot Wind Tunnel. During his 3 year tenure, he supervised the aerodynamic development of various transportation and architectural projects including cars for various clients.
 
Ichiro graduated with honors from California Institute of Technology in 1983. He also holds a doctorate from Caltech (1991) and a masters degree from MIT (1985), both in aeronautical engineering.
