Biography
Prof. Mikio Umeda is member of the Scientific Council of Japan, and Corporate Executive Adviser to Yanmar Agribusiness Company. He was formerly a professor at Kyoto University and in retirement served as the senior director of its Career Support Center. He also has had design leadership positions at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. He was the secretary-general of the International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (CIGR), and the president of the Japanese Society of Agricultural Machinery and Food Engineers. He was visiting researcher at Hohenheim University in Stuttgart, Germany. His research fields are agricultural and smart farming. Since 2015 he had more than 10 times presentations and lectures at universities and research institutes every year.

 

Abstract
First, past, present and future of agriculture in Asia are discussed. Japanese Government adopted Scientific Innovation Promotion Program (SIP, 2014-2018) and set 11 projects. Next generation agriculture, forest and fisheries technology was adopted. Hardware and software technology on smart farming system for rice cultivating are drastically progressed. Japanese one continues Second SIP (2018-2022). In their projects total 23 important technologies have been developed. In August 2018 Prof. Umeda was invited the conference on agricultural engineering education in Kunming, Yunnan. Innovation, improvement and reform of Agricultural Engineering Education have been discussed. In the conference the development of agricultural mechanization in China was divided 4 stages from 1.0 to 4.0. In stage 4.0 the realization of smart farming including autonomous, intelligence and machinery + communication technologies must be targets. SJTU and Yanmar has the joint project for electric driven combine header. The key technology is the ability of battery. Battery driven tractor and plater are introduced and discussed. Other advance technologies that is group control and wireless electric power transfer are introduced.
