About the School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Established in 1913, the School of Mechanical Engineering has granted over 44,000 degrees, and produced lots of early pioneers in China’s modern industry. Through the continuous growth of the century, the school has obtained outstanding accomplishments in various aspects like research output, industry interaction, education and globalization. In 2012, the school has been elegantly selected for ‘Pilot School Program’ by State Council of China, through which considerable innovations have been taken to reform the education system and the faculty hiring & promotion procedures. The School has over 330 faculty members, and its annual research funding has grown rapidly in the last decade, reaching 66M USD in the year 2013 (over 40% from industry). In terms of comprehensive strength evaluation given by the Ministry of Education of China, the subject in Mechanical Engineering has been ranked to be the first among all universities in China in the last decade.
In turbomachinery field, a total of five academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering & Sciences have been worked and graduated from the school. In recent years, substantial national research budget has been directed in gas turbine /aero-enginefield in China. Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been quick to set up a center of excellence in Gas Turbine & Aero-engine Technology responding to the emerging massive opportunities in the related academic and industry fields. The university has dedicated to the partnership with Dongfang Electric Group, Haerbin Electric Group, Shanghai Electric Group, AVIC, etc. In addition, the Siemens-SJTU Gas Turbine Joint Research Center was setup in 2013 to promote research and academic collaborations.
